Global Roughage Feed Production
According to a 2016 survey, around 1 Billion tonnes of Animal feed is produced every year on a global scale. Livestock & poultry feed is generally divided into two broad categories: roughage, and concentrate. Roughage occupies a major chunk of the annual produce (around 50%) and is used extensively. The huge production share signals at it being important. Let's find out in detail.
Roughage is characterized by a maximum of 70% of total digestible nutrients and minimum 18% of crude fiber content. Contrary to the general perception, roughage is actually the more important part of the livestock’s diet. This holds true mainly because grass and fodder (collectively referred to as roughage) is the
natural meal of cows. In general, the price of roughage is low and it is easily available in large quantities, making it a convenient feeding option. However, this comes at the cost of quality, since the nutritional value of roughage is generally low. (Recent News: Test-running of Newly Developed Small Cattle Feed Manufacturing Unit )
Roughage Animal Feed Processing
The most effective manner of feeding roughage to cows is in form of pellets. There's an elaborate procedure that's followed for making pellets, which is as follows:
- Cleaning
Before the roughage can be processed, it needs to be cleaned. The intent is to remove the residue and remove the typical grassy odor. Also, treating the load with water makes it soft enough for the next step.
- Physical & Chemical Treatment
The focus is now on bringing the roughage to the ideal length, and then changing its texture to suit the livestock. Also, it is enriched in nutrients. This is done by:
a. Cutting down to the right length and then subjecting to crushers. This ensures that the roughage is easier to digest.
b. The load is treated with ammonia, which helps in improving its nutritional quality.
c. With the intent of further converting it into simpler matter, the load is then subjected to fermentation. This further improves its ability to be chewed.

- Conversion into Pellets
This step involves processing using machines to impart necessary chemical and physical characteristics. The processes remove the last few residual elements and convert the feed into a form which can be easily masticated and consumed with minimum biological labor. This can be mixed with the concentrated feed if the nutritional value is to be improved. (Related Project: 2 tons per hour Animal Feed Pellet Line in Uganda)
Benefits of Making Roughage Feed into Pellets
The choice of feeding roughage as pellets is an educated one. There are several benefits of subjecting roughage to the above extensive process, such as:
- The form-factor is extremely easy to transport.
- The chemical processes make the roughage robust because the load can be easily stored without risk of deterioration.
- In terms of nutrition, the end-product is richer than the unprocessed load.
- The form factor aids consumption while reducing the overall wastage.
