Roughage Feed Processing and Utilization

Livestock and poultry feeds are classified into Roughages, Concentrates, and Supplements. Feeds with more than 18 percent crude fiber are termed roughages while concentrates are feeds with less than 18% of fiber. The high percentage of crude fiber present in roughages gives them a lower digestibility and a denser volume. These two factors contribute to their poorer nutritional benefits when compared to concentrates. Roughages such as hay can be made from various sources including agricultural products such as grains and stalks and byproducts of plant processing such as vines, stalks, and shells. Because of their varied sources, high production volumes and low prices, they are the major feed source for livestock with grass-based diets. (Our Project: 5 ton/h Poultry Feed Pellet Plant )

Common Processing Methods of Roughage Feedstuff

The processes needed to prepare roughages are discussed below:

  • Wetting and Soaking

This is done to soften the forage while also eliminating sediments, tannins and foul smell. The resulting forage has an improved taste thus increasing livestock feed intake. The process also leads to the production of organic and lactic acids and its products are generally more beneficial in nutritional
terms.

  • Cutting and Crushing

Forages are cut to shorter length to make stirring, eating and chewing them easier. The species and age of animals determine the cut length of the roughages because the length affects both chewing and rumination. However, not all sources are a good candidate for crushing, crushing coarse fodder, for example, makes feed less digestible and can hamper the rumination process in ruminants. In this process, roughages can also be converted into grass powder.

  • Ammoniation

Roughages are generally low in protein, hence the ammoniation of feeds helps to increase their protein content. As high as 5-6% increase in crude protein have been observed after the treatment of straw. This process also increases palatability thus contributing to a 20-25% higher feed intake by livestock.

  • Pelletizing

Pelletization of feeds helps to release its effective ingredients by rupturing the cell wall of grain aleurone layer. This improves the absorption and utilization of the feed by livestock and poultry. The pelletizing process reduces crude fiber content, breaks down carbohydrate and gelatinize the starch, all of which contribute to an improved energy utilization. It can also contribute greater efficiency to phosphorous content and increase the rate of nitrogen base acids utilization. The key equipment in this process is poultry feed pellet machine.

Whay Making Feed Mash into Feed Pellets?

Feed pellets have lots of advantages when compared with powder or mash feeds, these include:

  • Being easier to package, store and transport.
  • Having a higher stability and longer shelf life
  • Improving feed taste thereby reducing wastage
  • Having a higher feed density and increasing feed intake
